History

Virginia Tech's School of Plant and Environmental Sciences and VA Seafood AREC along with the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research launched the Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) Innovation Center in 2019. Dr. Scott Lowman and Dr. Michael Evans became the Co-Directors and Dr. Michael Schwarz became the Associate Director. Read the full story about the launch in this IALR NEWS STORY.

The CEA Innovation Center continues to expand with VT post-doc, Dr. Emily Zhou, and VT SPES Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist, Dr. Kaylee South, both stationed in Danville.

The CEA Innovation Center teamed up with Indoor Ag-Con to host the first annual CEA Summit East. Read more about the first event in this IALR NEWS STORY.

Ekene Tharpe, Horticulture M.S. student with the School of Plant and Environmental Sciences, Advised by Dr. Michael Evans, successfully defended her thesis, Dwarf Tomatoes in an Indoor Vertical System. She conducted her research in Danville, VA in the vertical farm.
